This report examines criminal cases finalized in 2011 in the New South Wales (NSW) Local, Children's District and Supreme Courts.
Abstract
Results show that enhancements to the JusticeLink system in November 2010 have resulted in improved recording of ex parte convictions, legal representation and plea. The proportion of persons with unknown legal representation has decreased from 41.9 percent in 2010 to 0 0.2 percent in 2011. The proportion of persons proven guilty in the Local Courts but with no plea recorded for any offenses has decreased from 121.6 percent in 2010 to 1.6 percent in 2011. The proportion of persons finalized by ex parte conviction has increased from 9.1 percent in 2010 to 13.9 percent in 2011. Noteworthy trends include the decrease in criminal disposals in the Local Court and a slight increase in disposal in the Higher Courts. Criminal disposals in the Children's Court remained stable. The number of persons/organizations with a matter finalized in the Local Court decreased by 4.5 percent, while the number of persons with a matter finalized in the Children's Court was similar over both years. Persons finalized in trial and sentence matters in the Higher Courts increased by 5.0 percent. Tables, notes, and appendixes
