This document presents data on crimes in New South Wales, Australia from January 1999 to December 2001.
Abstract
The data was reported to or detected by New South Wales police and extracted from the Computerized Operational Policing System (COPS) of the New South Wales Police Service in January 2002. Four of the 16 major offense categories are trending upwards. There was a statistically significant downward trend in the monthly numbers of recorded criminal incidents for indecent assault, act of indecency, other sexual offenses (down by 6 percent), and break and enter -- dwelling (down by 3.2 percent). There was no statistically significant generally upward or downward trend in the monthly numbers of recorded criminal incidents for murder, sexual assault, robbery with a weapon not a firearm, robbery without a weapon, break and enter -- non-dwelling, motor vehicle theft, steal from motor vehicle, steal from retail store, steal from dwelling, and malicious damage to property. There was a statistically significant upward trend in the monthly numbers of recorded criminal incidents for assault (up by 7.6 percent), robbery with a firearm (up by 34 percent), steal from person (up by 28 percent), and fraud (up by 16 percent). There was a statistically significant downward trend in persons issued with court attendance notice (down by 12 percent). There was a significant downward trend in the number of persons issued with summons (down by 11 percent). There was no statistically significant upward or downward trend in persons charged and persons issued with field court attendance notice. 13 figures, 4 notes, 30 tables, 3 appendices
