Abstract
A total of 86,400 persons were found guilty of or cautioned for drunkenness offenses in 1990, 7 percent less than in 1989. A total of 48,600 of offenders were cautioned compared with 49,900 in 1989. The peak ages of known offending for drunkenness were 19 and 20 years for males in 1990 and 18 years for females. For those aged 18 to 20, 76 percent of these offenses were for aggravated drunkenness, but for those over 30, the proportion was 40 percent. The highest rate of offending for drunkenness per 100,000 population was in Metropolitan Police District (682). A total of 1,690 persons under 18 were found guilty of, or cautioned for, buying intoxicating liquor and 730 licensees for selling intoxicating liquor to persons under 18 in 1990. These compare with 2,320 and 410 respectively in 1986. 4 figures, 9 tables, and 7 notes
