Forms and procedures for conducting a risk assessment of offenders in Iowa, using the State's 1983 model system, are presented, together with case examples illustrating the use of the system.
          Abstract
The coding of the offender risk assessment involves a five-step process: scoring of four general risk factors (substance abuse, current offense, criminal history, and age at conviction); offender typing as violent or nonviolent; scoring of special risk factors relating to the offender's criminal history; a final general risk assessment; and a final violence and property risk assessment. Definitions of the items on the forms are also supplied.
