Abstract
In 1977, 182 basic police officer training schools were completed, with a record number of 3,908 officers certified by the Ohio Peace Officer Training Council. Many schools voluntarily increased their basic training hours beyond the required minimum 280 hours. Upon completion of the basic course, nearly every student expressed a desire for further schooling. As a result, the advanced and inservice training have been intensified, producing the increased enrollment at the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy. Another annual firearms instructor training program was held at Camp Perry, Ohio, with 48 officers attending from various law enforcement agencies throughout the State. Only half of the applicants could be accepted. The purpose of the Peace Officer Training Academy is to provide quality instruction in advanced and technical subjects for the State's peace officers. The instructional staff consists of 10 persons with up to 27 years law enforcement experience each. Graphic data show the number of courses and the enrollment. Outside use of the Academy and its operating budget are also shown. Counties, townships, and municipalities who had deputies attending basic training classes during the year are listed, along with the number of persons attending. The number of officers completing training is shown as well. The names of those attending the firearms instructors training are listed, along with the agency represented.
