This fact sheet provides grant information and resources for entities that may be interested in the Paul Coverdell Forensic Science Improvement Grants Program (the Coverdell program), from the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), which awards grants to states and units of local government in order to help improve the quality and timeliness of forensic science and medical examiner/coroner services. The fact sheet notes that, among other things, funds may be used to eliminate backlogs in the analysis of forensic evidence and to train and employ forensic laboratory personnel, as needed, to eliminate such backlogs. Eligible entities for applying to both “base” (formula) and competitive funds include State Administering Agencies (SAAs), while units of local government may apply for competitive funds.
