Based on 7 years of research, this book examines the scope of phencyclidine (PCP) abuse and discusses its recognition, management, and prevention.
Abstract
Research included the study of over 2,000 PCP abusers, extensive court work, and training activities throughout the United States and abroad. The book discusses the nature of PCP, its development and multiple identities, the extent of its abuse, and efforts to control it. It examines PCP's pharmacological novelty, the patterns of usage, the PCP experience, its effects on the brain and sexual functioning, its impact on the community, and common questions about PCP. A chapter on recognizing the PCP user discusses the forms and methods of use of the drug and techniques for managing users. In addition, guidelines on managing the PCP user are presented for those working in law enforcement, emergency medicine, community drug treatment, and mental health. Legal issues related to PCP intoxication and the role of the expert witness are covered in a chapter on litigating the PCP user. The final chapter focuses on community action to stop PCP abuse, with emphasis on interactions between human service providers through network building and prevention. Figures, tables, and case examples are provided. Chapter reference lists, a glossary, a list of referral agencies, a film list, a PCP abuse training outline, an index, and a bibliography of about 180 references are appended.
