Personal Security Handbook: How You and Your Family Can Minimize Risks to Personal Safety

NCJ Number
Date Published
14 pages

Intended mainly for use of the members of the Federal judiciary and other court personnel, this manual on personal security offers suggestions that are also designed to increase the personal security of any public official or private citizen and their family members.

Readers are advised to become familiar with protective measures, to review them periodically, and to make sure that every family member knows what to do in an emergency. They should also call the local police or the United States Marshal's office if anything suspicious occurs. Security measures include making the home secure, developing friendly relationships with neighbors, arranging for an unlisted home telephone number, being alert to suspicious activities, posting emergency numbers on the telephone, and taking special precautions for children. Further guidelines cover packages and mail, domestic employees, security precautions to take when away from home, security in personal vehicles and commercial transportation, and safety considerations related to airline travel. Lists of personal and vehicle data to keep available for law enforcement purposes.
