A NARRATIVE AND STATISTICAL PRESENTATION OF THE MASSACHUSETTS CRIME RATES FOR INDEX OFFENSES, WITH COMPARATIVE DATA FOR THE OTHER 49 STATES.
Abstract
SEVERAL TABLES OF DATA ARE PROVIDED, INCLUDING A RANK ORDER OF CRIME RATES FOR THE 50 STATES, TRENDS IN NATIONAL AVERAGE RATES FOR EACH CRIME FOR 1968 THROUGH 1973, YEARLY FLUCTUATIONS IN CRIME RATES AND RANKINGS FOR THE NEW ENGLAND REGION, AND CRIME RATES AND RANKINGS FOR MASSACHUSETTS FOR 1968 THROUGH 1973. THE DATA SHOW THAT CRIME RATES IN MASSACHUSETTS FOR MURDER, RAPE, AGGRAVATED ASSAULT, AND LARCENY WERE LOWER THAN THE NATIONAL AVERAGE. RATES FOR THE CRIME OF ROBBERY WERE ONLY SLIGHTLY LOWER THAN THE NATIONAL AVERAGE, WHILE MASSACHUSETTS' RATES FOR BURGLARY AND AUTO THEFT WERE HIGHER THAN THE NATIONAL AVERAGE.
