Abstract
Created by the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), this desk reference is a valuable guide for new police executives as they attempt to define their role and assert their leadership. The desk reference contains information about the IACP and the Research Center Directorate, as well as information about current projects and publications. Information is also provided about State associations of chiefs of police. Other resources offered throughout the desk reference include Web site referrals, a best practices guide for the acquisition of new technologies, and a sample issue of Big Ideas for Smaller Agencies. Chapters focus on leadership, ethics, policies and procedures, accreditation, funding and grant writing, recruitment and retention, and budgeting for small police agencies. Other chapters explore how to best manage and train Generation X recruits and how to go about institutionalizing mentoring relationships within police departments. Organizational strategies for effective police departments are explored, including issues of staffing, administrative and organizational services, information management, and professional standards. Advice is offered on how to best use internal and community surveys to improve police services and strengthen organizational cohesion. Other resources included are an IACP membership application, Mentoring Project applications, and a complimentary subscription form for Big Ideas. Exhibits
