Following background information on the history, contents, informational value, definitions, and rules for recording Germany's Police Crime Statistics, this report presents data on crimes known to police in Germany for 2006 compared with 2005 crime statistics.
Abstract
The total number of recorded offenses in 2006 was 6,304,223, a 1.4-percent decline from 2005. The number of crimes cleared by arrest was 3,492 in 2006, a 0.7-percent decline from 2005. The overall clearance rate for 2006 was 55.4 percent compared to 55 percent for 2005. The number of violent crimes (murder and manslaughter, rape and aggravated sexual coercion, robberies, and dangerous and serious bodily injury) was 215,471 in 2006, a 1.2-percent increase from 2005. Theft offenses (motor vehicle theft, bicycle theft, theft of noncash means of payment, theft from vehicles, shoplifting, burglary, and pickpocketing) numbered 2,601,902 in 2006, a 4.6-percent decrease from 2005. There were 954,277 fraud offenses known to police in 2006, a 0.5-percent increase from 2005. Other categories of offenses for which data are reported are breaches of trust, insolvency offenses, competition or corruption offenses, drug offenses, and environmental crime. Data on suspects address gender, age, and nationality. Gender and age percentages are reported for the following offenses: murder and manslaughter; offenses against sexual self-determination with the use of violence or exploiting a state of dependence; robbery/extortion accompanied by violence and assault on motorists with intent to rob; bodily injury; and offenses against personal freedom. Data are also provided on monetary losses for individual offenses or for offense categories.
