This report presents statistical information on the numbers and types of police personnel in England and Wales as of March 31, 2010.
Abstract
Highlights of the main findings of the report include: (1) there were 143,734 fulltime equivalent (FTE) police officers in the 43 police forces of England and Wales as of March 31, 2010; (2) there were 6,642 FTE minority ethnic officers in the 43 police forces, 4.6 percent of the total police strength, compared with 4.4 percent on March 31, 2009; (3) the FTE police officer strength figure for the 43 police forces as of March 31, 2010 was 141,631, this was a decrease of 16 officers compared to a year earlier; (4) FTE police staff numbers for the 43 forces stand at 79,596, an increase of 0.4 percent compared to a year earlier; and (5) the total number of FTE police community support officers in the 43 police forces of England and Wales was 16,918, an increase of 2.5 percent from the previous year. This report provides statistical data on police service strength, police officer strength, special constabulary strength, and strength of staff in supporting roles in England and Wales as of March 31, 2010.
