Abstract
VOLUNTEERS IN PROBATION, OPERATING AS AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE PROBATION DEPARTMENT, ASSISTS IN EXTENDING PRESENT PROBATION PROGRAMS AND DEVELOPING AN AWARENESS AND CONCERN FOR CRIME PREVENTION THROUGH CITIZEN PARTICIPATION. THE MATERIAL PRESENTED IN THIS MANUAL WAS DEVELOPED BY STAFF OF THE VOLUNTEER'S PROJECT OF THE N.Y. STATE DIVISION OF PROBATION IN COLLABORATION WITH REPRESENTATIVES OF TWENTY LOCAL PROBATION DEPARTMENTS WITHIN NEW YORK STATE. A LIST OF PROBATION PROGRAMS THAT COULD INCLUDE VOLUNTEERS IS PROVIDED. POLICIES AND PROCEDURES WITH RESPECT TO USE AND TREATMENT OF VOLUNTEERS ARE LISTED FOR THE FOLLOWING PROBATION AREAS: MANAGEMENT, PLANNING, PROBATION SERVICES, PROGRAM OPERATION, INTAKE, SUPERVISION, INVESTIGATION, PROBATION STAFF, CLERICAL STAFF, BUDGETING, RECORD KEEPING, PUBLIC RELATIONS, EVALUATION, AND EX-OFFENDER EMPLOYMENT.
