POST GUIDELINES FOR REVIEWING AUDIO-VISUAL TRAINING MATERIALS

NCJ Number

Audiovisual materials represent a powerful tool in law enforcement education, and the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) has devised guidelines to help instructors select high-quality materials that will lead students to correct action.
Abstract
The guidelines stipulate that audiovisual materials should lead students to react appropriately to job situations; be compatible with existing laws, ethics, and procedures; be free of bias; be free of offensive language and inappropriate humor; be relevant to the subject being taught; be appropriate for the intended audience; and reflect the perspective of law enforcement management and subject matter experts. The POST Commission is confident that using its guidelines to review audiovisual materials prior to classroom presentation will have a positive impact, improve training, and reduce possible future civil liability. Appendixes contain supplemental information on POST-certified courses and an audiovisual materials review checklist.
