Based on the work of a committee of Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) Administrators from six states and assistance from the PDMP Training and Technical Assistance Center (TTAC), this Technical Assistance Guide was created to be a reference tool for new and inexperienced PDMP Administrators.
Abstract
In the introduction, the goal of PDMPs is defined as "the collection, analysis, and reporting of information on the prescribing, dispensing, and use of prescription drugs within a state." The intent is to uphold both state laws that ensure citizens' access to appropriate pharmaceutical care and deter the diversion of prescription drugs for abuse. The Guide's introduction is followed by an overview of the history of PDMPs and PDMP technology. Resources for PDMPs are then reviewed, including PDMP capabilities, funding opportunities, and an overview of state statutes and regulations related to PDMPs. The Guide's section on PDMP resources provides links to general information, along with the policies and capabilities that are the foundation for every PDMP. This information is primarily from PDMP Administrators in each state, based on bi-annual questionnaires. Information covered includes individual state profiles, general PDMP information, PDMP policies and procedures, technology, and types of available PDMP reports. The Guide also contains lists of resource contacts, other technical assistance materials, recommendations/considerations, and appended supplementary material.
