ACCOUNT OF AN EXPERIMENT IN PROCESSING SELECTED INDIVIDUALS ACCUSED OF SHOPLIFTING IN THE NETHERLANDS BY THE POLICE, THUS AVOIDING TIME-CONSUMING TRIALS.
Abstract
A GROUP OF 55 SUSPECTS WERE PROCESSED DURING THE EXPERIMENT. AMONG THE CRITERIA APPLIED IN SELECTING THEM WERE THAT THEY WERE FIRST OFFENDERS WORKING ALONE, THAT THEY WERE ADULTS, AND THAT THEY ADMITTED THEIR GUILT. CASES CONSIDERED TOO SERIOUS FOR THE POLICE TO HANDLE WERE TURNED OVER TO THE ASSISTANT PUBLIC PROSECUTOR. THE SUSPECTS WERE GIVEN INFORMATION REGARDING REHABILITATION SERVICES, BUT FEW TOOK ADVANTAGE OF IT. INFORMATION ON THE SUSPECTS' AGE AND SEX, NATURE OF THE ARTICLES STOLEN AND THEIR VALUE IS PROVIDED. --IN DUTCH
