This report from the New York State Department of Correctional Services presents data on the demographic and criminal history characteristics of the inmate population as of January 1, 2010.
Abstract
Findings in this report show that: as of January 1, 2010, 58,378 inmates were in custody, of which 95.8 percent were male; the average age of the offenders was 37; 51 percent of the inmates were African-American, 25 percent were Hispanic, and 22 percent were White; 35 percent of the female population was White, compared to 21 percent of the male population; 49 percent of the inmates were committed from New York City, and 12 percent were committed from suburban New York; 66 percent of the inmates reported never being married, while 59 percent reported having at least one child, over 60 percent of the inmates were serving time for a violent felony offense; and 34 percent had served a prior prison term. Data for this report were collected by the New York State Department of Correctional Services for all inmates in custody as of January 1, 2010. The information in the report is presented in two sections. Section one presents the demographic characteristics of inmates including sex, gender, age, race/ethnic status, area of commitment, birthplace, marital status, religion, and veteran status. The second section presents information on the criminal history of the inmates including minimum sentence, commitment crime, second felony sentencing status, prior adult criminal record, and length of time in department custody.
