This 2-day training program provides community corrections officers with information on strategies they can use to improve their interactions with and services to crime victims.
Abstract
The training has five objectives. First, it describes the impacts of crime on its victims. Second, it demonstrates skills in communicating effectively with crime victims. Third, it identifies approaches for obtaining victim impact statements and providing guidance to victims on what to include in these statements. Fourth, it lists points in the community corrections process when notification should be provided to victims. Fifth, it demonstrates strategies for increasing restitution collections from supervised offenders. Prior to the onsite training, participants complete a 1-hour online lesson on "The Role of Community Corrections in Victim Services." The following are the titles of the five onsite training modules: "Welcome and Introductions," "Communicating Effectively With Crime Victims," "Incorporating Victim Input throughout the Community Corrections Process," "Victim Notification," and "Enhancing Restitution Management and Enforcement." Lesson plans for each module, handouts, and other supplemental material are provided.
