This report provides an overview of the National Institute of Corrections (NIC) for fiscal year 2010.
Abstract
The NIC is a center of learning, innovation, and leadership that shapes and advances effective correctional practice and public policy. NIC's activities contribute significantly to the achievement of Federal, State, and local correctional goals and priorities. NIC addresses the needs of corrections staff by providing specialized training to those who manage offenders and work on their behalf. Corrections address the needs of inmates and offenders in the same manner that governments address individuals' needs in the outside world. Included in this report is an overview of the NIC organization, services, mission, goals, and strategies; a detailed division-by-division breakdown of the structure of the agency; a report on regional highlights; a report on the regional training initiative; a description of the mission of NIC and how NIC helps meet the challenge of newly released offenders, an explanation of the NIC Information Center; a description of how NIC addresses the needs of elected officials and corrections executives who work directly with inmates and offenders; a discussion on how the NIC is involved in evidence-based practices, and a discussion on how the NIC addresses other contemporary issues in corrections. 2 tables
