This report presents the findings of a youth vandalism survey conducted in four rural Minnesota counties -- Kittson, McLeod, Swift, and Yellow Medicine -- during February 1981. The survey's results can be used in formulating new rural youth vandalism prevention programs.
Abstract
Survey results illustrate the magnitude of the youth vandalism problem (the incidence and costs) and profile youth vandals by sex, place and length of residency, attitudes and parental characteristics, memberships, and church attendance. Vandalism is a group activity, accompanied by high alcohol and drug use. It usually occurs at night and its targets vary. Vandalism is difficult to counter by traditional law enforcement means because it is motivated and supported by group ethics. Suggestions for preventing vandalism are directed to property owners, parents, and community institutions. The questionnaire is appended. Tables illustrate study data.
