Abstract
It reviews student responsibilities and rights, including the right to safe schools, with emphasis on the doctrines of in loco parentis and parens patria. The relationship between orderly, disciplined schools and safe, productive schools is examined. Criminal and noncriminal acts and procedures to use in labeling events, determining consequences, administering sanctions, and keeping records are outlined. Legal policies that regulate discipline methods used in schools are also reviewed. Suggestions are offered for preparing discipline codes, defining and tracking rule infractions, and disciplining special education students. A resource section suggests publications, policies, and films providing further assistance with school discipline. Chapter notes.
