This report summarizes data on the nature and extent of violent crimes committed in Alabama schools, as reported for calendar 2011 by criminal justice agencies to the Alabama Criminal Justice Information Center's Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program.
Abstract
The Violent crimes covered by the UCR program are homicide, rape, robbery, and aggravated and simple assaults. This report indicates there were 296 violent crimes committed on school grounds in the State that were reported to a law enforcement agency. There was one homicide, 17 rapes, 30 robberies, and 248 aggravated assaults. There were 1,844 simple assaults on school grounds reported in 2011. Based on these figures, the rate for school violence in the State in calendar year 2011 was 44.6 per 1000,000 population. On average, six school- violence offenses were reported per day. Forty-four percent of school violence incidents were cleared. There were 1,209 juvenile victims of school violence in 2011, composing 57 percent of all school violence victims; 41 percent of the victims were adults, and the ages of 2 percent of the victims were unknown. Forty-one percent of school-violence offenders were juveniles, 19 percent were adults, and the ages of 40 percent of the offenders were unknown. Fifty-three percent of school-violence victims were female, and 47 percent were male. Fifty-five percent of the victims were White, 43 percent were Black, and 2 percent were of another race, or their race was unknown. Forty-five percent of school-violence offenders were male, 23 percent were female, and the sex of 32 percent was unknown. Handguns or other firearms were used in only 1 percent of school-violence offenses. Forty-three percent of school-violence offenses occurred at an elementary or secondary school, and 22 percent occurred at a college or university; 35 percent occurred at an unspecified type of school. Extensive tables and figures
