The Alaska Department of Corrections has developed a standards manual to ensure a uniform approach to the treatment of sex offenders in State correctional institutions.
Abstract
The standards are based on several concepts: that treatment can reduce but not eliminate the threat posed by sex offenders to the community, that sex offenders must accept responsibility for their actions, that sex offending behavior is learned and can be changed, and that sex offender treatment programs must be conducted with professional and ethnical behavior. The standards cover program description, the sex offender tracking system, sex offender program admission criteria, prison assessment and treatment components, treatment sequence, treatment team reviews, measures of progress, program files, clinical summaries, and program removal. Other sections deal with issues related to Native Alaskans and other special populations, personnel, interagency coordination, community treatment of sex offenders, and program evaluation.
