Abstract
This is a comprehensive report that covers a whole range of issues surrounding sexual violence. Areas addressed include acquaintance rape, AIDS and sexual assault, sexual assault of children and of adults, economic costs of sexual violence, pornography, pregnancy and abortion, prostitution, ritual sexual abuse, self-defense, sex offenders and sexual harassment. Each section begins with an introduction and then provides statistical information about the topic including the prevalence of the particular type of offense or problem, information about the victims and information about offenders. The impact on the victim is discussed. In the case of pornography, the impact on the viewer and the relationship between pornography and sex offenders are discussed. Relevant intervention is also addressed including involving the criminal justice system, legal system, counselors or others. In the case of some of the topics, special issues are also covered. For example, the chapter on sexual harassment makes some recommendations for action victims should take. The chapter on child sexual abuse discusses Illinois' mandatory reporting law. Each section ends with a list of references.
