This report presents a statistical description of all persons who were released from the Massachusetts Department of Correction during 1980.
Abstract
Information is presented on individuals released from prisons and from prerelease institutions. Tables contain information on the nature of the present offense, personal background characteristics, criminal history variables, furlough participation variables, and release variables for all individuals released from Massachusetts correctional institutions. During 1980, 1,015 persons were released to the street. A total of 64 percent served an indeterminate minimum sentence, and 53 percent served a maximum sentence of 7 years or less. The median age at incarceration for the releases during 1980 was 23 years old. A total of 79 percent of releases were male; most were single; and 34 percent were black, 65 percent were white, one was a native American, and 1 percent were Hispanic.
