This Strategic Communications Toolkit provides instruction in and resources for communications and media strategies for recipients of grants under the federal Byrne Criminal Justice Innovation Program, which gives high priority to building collaborations among criminal justice agencies and community resources, which can be facilitated through strategic communications.
Abstract
This toolkit presents media strategies for enhancing community engagement and tailoring messages to target audiences. It also provides guidance in developing a communications plan for influencing public opinion about priority public safety issues. Users of this toolkit will learn how to write effective messages that are meaningful for various community audiences. In addition, the toolkit provides a media vocabulary that is conducive to communication with editors and reporters. Another resource provided in the toolkit is guidance in ways to develop talking points that can be shaped and refined for various media outlets. Further, the toolkit identifies effective tools for tracking and measuring the impact of various communication strategies.
