Abstract

This fact sheet on the Strengthening Medical Examiner-Coroner System Program provides background about the creation of the program, stemming from a national shortage of practicing and board-certified forensic pathologists in the medicolegal death investigation (MDI) workforce. Two purpose areas are funded under this program: forensic pathology fellowships, and medical examiner-coroner office accreditation. The fact sheet provides a list of program awards and funding amounts from fiscal year 2017 through 2022, and lists program accomplishments for both purpose areas. It also highlights a success story, featuring Kittitas County Coroner’s Office which was able to invest in a portable x-ray machine, thanks to funding from this award. The fact sheet includes background about the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), its purpose, and contact information.
