Abstract
Since the nature and extent of mental illness and addictive disorders can change over time, this Source Book emphasizes data collected in the 1990s. Older data are included when useful and when they are the only available data on a topic. The information is organized into "Fact Sheets," which provide data on a variety of issues pertinent to substance abuse and mental disorders. Data encompass the nature, extent, and trends of substance abuse and mental disorders; social costs and consequences of substance abuse and mental disorders; and prevention, treatment, and other intervention programs for substance abuse and mental disorders. Data systems of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration form the core of the statistics for this compendium. This second edition has updated information presented in the first edition and has added more information in various areas, particularly on racial and ethnic groups, new substance abuse analyses, and mental health. New substance abuse topics include drug testing in the workplace, drug use by disability status, substance abuse in the military, problems associated with drinking and drug use by students, and estimates of treatment need. New mental health topics include the costs of mental illness by disorder, emotional disorders among students, suicide death rates in the Pacific Island area, current mental disorder among incarcerated women, mental disorders as causes of death, and Medicaid mental health treatment for children. The section on prevention, treatment, and other intervention programs for substance abuse and mental health is also new. Other sections of the Source Book contain descriptions of the primary data sources for the Fact Sheets, a glossary, references used as data sources for the Fact Sheets, and a subject index. Extensive tabular and graphic data
