This article outlines a multi-faceted approach for supervision of sex offenders used in the Middle District of Florida.
Abstract
Statistics from the U.S. Sentencing Commission show that the Middle District of Florida (MDFL) has consistently exceeded the national average in the sentencing of sex offenders. This high rate of sentencing has resulted from the multi-faceted approach implemented by the U.S. Probation Office in MDFL. This article outlines the different parts of this approach. The approach begins with the hub, the center part of the approach that provides strength. The hub includes the district court, the Administrative Office, and the chief United States probation officer in the district. The interaction of these parts is discussed in detail. The article next describes the various supervision strategies that are essential to the success of this approach. These strategies include: the role of the presentence officer, the role of the United States probation office, the role of the supervising United States probation officer, the role of collateral contacts, the role of the treatment provider and polygrapher, the role of the search team, the role of the computer forensic team, and the role of local and Federal law enforcement. All these components are required to have a successful approach to dealing with sex offenders. References and a case study
