Abstract
This tool for law enforcement was developed for the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs (OJP) by the AMBER Alert Training and Technical Assistance Program (AATTAP), in collaboration with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) and the Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Justice Services. Core information is based on NCMEC's Law Enforcement Guide to Case Investigation and Investigative Checklist, with input from experienced law enforcement investigators, including Tribal law enforcement and cultural advisers. In cases of endangered missing or abducted children, effective supervisory officer response is critical to the success of the investigation. This officer is the catalyst who provides guidance and overall investigative coordination and oversight. Supervisory officers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with this checklist prior to any reports of endangered missing or abducted children. It is advised that this checklist is a guide and is not intended to replace or supersede any local, state, or federal policies or procedures that might apply in such cases. The user has the option to download a comprehensive and/or a condensed version of the checklist. Supervisory officers are encouraged to download the PDF of the checklist to a personal device for reference. Instructions are provided for a download to either an android or Apple device. There are 11 tasks in the checklist.
