BOTH NARRATIVE AND TABULAR DATA IS PRESENTED ON THE FEMALES OFFENDER AND THE TYPE OF TREATMENT AVAILABLE BASED ON A STUDY OF THE 627 FEMALES IN CUSTODY AS OF SEPTEMBER 1, 1974.
Abstract
THE FEMALE OFFENDER CHARACTERIZED REPRESENTED 3.7 PERCENT OF THE TOTAL INMATE POPULATION IN THE TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS. STATISTICAL INFORMATION IS PRESENTED IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS: FEMALE OFFENDER POPULATION, FEMALE CHARACTERISTICS, EDUCATION AND INTELLIGENCE, OFFENSE, PRIOR CRIMINAL HISTORY, INSTITUTIONAL BEHAVIOR, AND INSTITUTIONAL ACTIVITY. MODAL VALUES FROM THIS STUDY INDICATE THAT THE 'TYPICAL' FEMALE OFFENDER: IS NEGRO, 28 YEARS OLD, AND MARRIED; HAS ONE OR MORE CHILDREN; WAS BORN IN TEXAS; RESIDES AND WAS CONVICTED IN EITHER HARRIS OR DALLAS COUNTY; IS A PROTESTANT AND A FIRST OFFENDER OVER 26 YEARS OF AGE; HAS AN INTELLIGENCE QUOTIENT OF 92 AND HAS COMPLETED THE NINTH GRADE; WAS SENTENCED FOR EITHER MURDER OR A DRUG OFFENSE, WAS COMMITTED FOR THE OFFENSE, AND IS SERVING A FIVE-YEAR SENTENCE; HAS NOT SERVED A PRIOR PROBATED SENTENCE OR BEEN IN ANY PRISON OR REFORMATORY PRIOR TO THE PRESENT CONFINEMENT; AND HAS A GOOD DISCIPLINE RECORD WHILE IN THE DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS.
