Abstract
RELEVANT INFORMATION CONCERNING POLICE WEAPONS AND AMMUNITION WAS PROVIDED BY FOUR LARGE POLICE DEPARTMENTS. THIS DOCUMENT IS AN ANALYSIS OF THIS INFORMATION IN CONJUCTION WITH BACKGROUND DATA ON WEAPONRY AND POLICE INJURY STATISTICS. THE ISSUES SURROUNDING THE USE OF LETHAL WEAPONS (VERSUS LESS LETHAL WEAPONS) ARE PRESENTED BUT NO VALUE JUDGMENTS ARE MADE. THE REPORT RECOMMENDS SUBSTANTIVE LABORATORY AND FIELD APPLICATION EVALUATION OF WEAPONRY ALONG WITH CONSIDERATION OF ALTERNATIVE APPROACHES TO PROVIDING BETTER PROTECTION TO LAW ENFORCEMENT PERSONNEL.
