A task force formed in 1988 studied the issues of whether the police department of Toledo, Ohio should convert to a semiautomatic pistol as a service weapon and, if so, which manufacturer and/or weapon to choose.
Abstract
The task force consisted of 10 police officers of various ranks and interests. The task force received and analyzed the available information and unanimously recommended that the agency change from a revolver to a semiautomatic pistol. It chose five manufacturers for further consideration and extensively tested sample weapons from each manufacturer. The pistols were rated subjectively for quality of finish and construction, slide action, trigger pull, safety mechanisms, weight and balance, grip size, magazine release mechanism, slide release mechanism, and ease of maintenance by the user. The second phase of the evaluation focused on weight and balance when loaded, grip finish, recoil, magazine insertion, and loading. The Sig Sauer received the highest ratings throughout the testing and evaluation process. Tables
