This issue briefly describes training opportunities offered under the National Institute of Justice's (NIJ's) National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center (NLECTC) System.

Abstract

The Forensic Technology Center of Excellence provides training in various forensic science subjects, including CSI effect theory, the principles of forensic DNA for officers of the court, the collection of DNA evidence at property crime scenes, training for firearm examiners, training in impression and pattern evidence, and training in biological screening. The Information and Geospatial Technologies Center of Excellence supports the Crime Mapping and Analysis Program, which offers a range of free courses on spatial analysis and crime mapping for crime analysts, planners, and police officers. The Corrections Technology Center of Excellence sponsors a training video that provides basic instruction on the use of Field Search, which is a suite of software products developed specifically for use in the field by non-technical criminal justice personnel in quickly and efficiently searching a target computer and creating a detailed report of findings. In a corrections setting, this software enables probation/parole officers to monitor offenders' computer use. Other free training resources for law enforcement and corrections personnel offered by Federal agencies outside of the NLECTC System are also briefly described.
