This annual report describes and photographically illustrates the training and employment programs of Federal Prison Industries, Inc. (UNICOR), with a focus on advances in programming since its creation in 1934.
Abstract
In 1984, UNICOR employed 9,000 inmates, and sales to Government agencies amounted to $200 million, with net earnings of $28.8 million from operations. Since its creation, UNICOR has remained self-sufficient and has experienced significant growth. Inmate industries now include electronics, data graphics, metal and wood, and textile and leather operations. The Automated Production and Control System, quality testing laboratories, the marketing division, the industrial design and quality enhancement divisions, and the research and development division provide support for these UNICOR operations. Through these diversified efforts, UNICOR has been able to provide increased employment and training and fund vocational training and performance pay programs for Federal inmates.
