This document presents the performance objectives and curriculum outline used by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training for training California law enforcement personnel on the lawful use of force.
Abstract
The curriculum includes 11 knowledge domains and one scenario. Topics include the ability to cope with danger, liability associated with the use of force, the legal framework for using reasonable force, the use of nonlethal force, justifiable homicide, fear and the use of deadly force, factors to consider when using deadly force, agency policy on the use of deadly force, the appropriate use of tear gas, and the use of the baton.
