This report provides explanatory information and statistical data regarding the performance and achievements of the Victoria Police Force (Australia) during 1979.
Abstract
It reviews the activities of the force over the past decade and discusses current police operations, crime and traffic statistics, legislative developments, police personnel and services, and changes in police administration. Tabular data are presented on the number of armed robberies and drug offenses during the year, on road traffic collisions and accidental deaths, on missing persons, on the fraud squad and forensic science laboratory workloads, and on juvenile offenses. The report notes that the crime rate rose from 3,100 in 1970 to 4,000 in 1979. However, the rise has not been steady and in some years the rate actually fell. Incidences of rape have risen, and 1979 was the worst year on record for murder rates. Drug offenses and serious assaults have also risen. Organizational charts, maps, additional tables, and a review of recent legislation are appended. An index is included.
