This document presents coding information and additional research information for a study of the women's correctional systems of Tennessee, New York, and Ohio between 1800 and 1935.
Abstract
The data collection examines the prison systems' origins and characteristics. Also included is information on female inmates' parentage, occupation, marital status, offense, sentence, prior commitments, method of release from prison, and presence of crime partners. Coding instructions are provided for these variables, as are alphabetical and numerical listings of the offenses included for study. Appendixes provide definitions of offense categories (violent, property, public order, and other) and a discussion of the materials and sampling procedures used in the study.
