This compilation of papers addresses issues in correctional education, correctional education programs, correctional education research as an emerging discipline, and correctional education in the international setting.
Abstract
The first part of the book covers the spectrum of correctional education with respect to research, teaching, and analysis. Specific topics include the higher education of prisoners, the matrix of behavior (reason, ethics, emotion, will, and context), the personal nature of professional concerns in correctional education, and prison education in Norway. The second part of the book describes issues in correctional education, with particular attention paid to long-term goals of prison education, creativity in prisons, correctional education curriculums and program objectives, curriculum issues for the incarcerated handicapped learner, the evaluation of correctional education programs, prisoner rehabilitation, mandatory prison programs, gender studies and the criminal justice system, and strategies for the community reintegration of prisoners. The third part of the book considers specific correctional education programs in the United States, England, Wales, and other countries. The focus is on adult basic education, curriculum development in prison education, and staff development in prison education departments. In covering research in correctional education, the fourth part of the book examines ways of promoting learning in prisons, educational television, anger control training with young offenders, and teaching practices and the efficacy of correctional education. The final section of the book discusses correctional education in the international setting and includes reports on prison education in Australia, Austria, England, France, Hong Kong, Ireland, and Sri Lanka.
