This videotape contains the proceedings of a live national satellite broadcast sponsored by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention in September 2000 to address ways of preventing underage drinking.
Abstract
The broadcast recognized that alcohol is the drug of choice for the majority of young people in the United States and that alcohol is one of the most common contributors to injury, death, and criminal behavior among young people. Participants in the broadcast indicated many effective strategies can be adopted to prevent underage alcohol use and related problems, strategies that basically fall into the following four categories: (1) limitations on access to alcohol; (2) expressions of community norms; (3) school-based strategies; and (4) prevention of impaired driving. The videotape is designed to help viewers learn more about these strategies and how they can be implemented in an effective manner. The videotape also describes programs in Puerto Rico, Las Vegas, Nevada, and Omaha, Nebraska to reduce youth access to alcohol and identifies resources available to assist States, communities, agencies, and organizations concerned about underage drinking.
