This brief document summarizes a program for childhood treatment for traumatic memory, with estimates of the costs to implement programs in Washington state.

Abstract

This brief document provides a several charts displaying meta-analysis of program effects, a benefit-cost summary, detailed monetary benefit estimates, detailed cost estimates, cumulative net cash flows over time, multiplicative adjustments applied to the meta-analysis, and a citation of the studies used in the meta-analysis. The document is a response to policymakers in Washington state who were interested in the impact of an eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) for childhood trauma; it breaks down the monetary costs and benefits to participants, taxpayers, other, and other indirect groups, along with overall total calculations. The detailed cost estimates compare the cost to implement EMDR programs in Washington and provide comparison costs for no treatment or treatment as usual. The authors performed a multivariate meta-regression analysis of 74 effect sizes from evaluations of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for depression or anxiety. The multiplicative adjustments for the studies provided in this document are based on the authors’ empirical knowledge of the research in a topic area; they also explain their rating and adjustments, and the multipliers they chose for the charts.
