It describes data measurement scales and data (workload, employee, systems, and performance) necessary for personnel planning. Common data collection methods, analysis and validation techniques (particularly for cross-tabulations), and sampling methods and research designs (descriptive, causal-comparative, experimental) are also explained. For the personnel selection process, the authors describe interview procedures and test score construction and interpretation. Alternative performance evaluation methods focus on the use of graphic rating scales, their limitations, and possible manipulation. The text explains how to perform function, task, and other job analysis methods; personnel forecasting models and techniques are also detailed. Reference notes, a subject index, and illustrated research and analysis techniques are provided. For other volumes on human resource planning, see NCJ 86367-68; see NCJ 86366 for a summary of the series.
