This guide provides a curriculum designed to increase the overall competency of the youth in Pennsylvania and assist them in their ability to develop successful life skills.
Abstract
This resource guide developed for Pennsylvania at-risk youth by the National Center for Juvenile Justice (NCJJ) offers educational advocates of youth with a curriculum to advance youth development and deter at-risk/problem behavior. The guide is divided into six subject specific skill-curricula: Pro-social (focus skill areas - aggression replacement training, crossroads anger management, cognitive life skills, and thinking for change (T4C); Moral Reasoning (focus skill areas- Corrective Actions Journal System, Courage to Take Action: A Cognitive-Behavioral System for Youth Offenders, Facts of Life Seminar, and Moral Recognition Therapy; Academic (focus skill areas- Arise Learning Strategy and Time Management, Boys and Girls Club Project Learn, Career Academy, Charter School, Communities in Schools, Upward Bound; Workforce Development (focus skill areas- Crossroads Jobtec, Goodwill Industries International, Inc., Job Corps, PA Careerlink, PA Conservation Corps (PCC), and Youth Build, Independent Living (focus skill areas- Arise Independent Living Curriculum, Casey Life Skills Tools, Curriculum and Lessons for Attaining Self-Sufficiency (CLASS), I Can Do It! A Micropedia of Living on Your Own (handbook) I'm Getting Ready...I Can Do It! (workbook), Kids + Kash, Preparing Adolescence for Young Adulthood, and the Rent Event; and Competency Development-Supportive Resources (highlighted focus skill areas- Victim Community Awareness: An Orientation for Juveniles, 4-H Youth Development Program, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, Girls Circle, Say it Straight, Stop Now and Plan Under 12 Outreach Project, Whytry, Parenting Wising (American Teen), Functional Family Therapy and more). For each of these curricula, a definition, relevance, and goals are outlined, and for each focus skill area an abstract, objectives, components, training and materials, and contact information is provided.
