This book presents the circumstances and arbitration decisions of 59 cases that challenge a school's right to discipline a teacher or that determine whether a teacher has a right to a particular benefit.
          Abstract
The circumstances of each case are outlined, and the arbitrator's decision and rationale are summarized. Some of the issues addressed in the cases are how a teacher should handle a misbehaving student, whether it is ever appropriate for a teacher to use force on a student, how a teacher should respond to a threatening student, and how schools should deal with situations involving drug use. Other issues addressed in the cases are whether teachers must comply with unfair rules, the< meaning and priority of 'academic freedom,' how public schools should respond to religious demands, and circumstances under which teachers should affirm their rights against the school administration. A 20-item selected bibliography, a statement of the Voluntary Labor Arbitration Rules of the American Arbitration Association, and a list of the addresses and phone numbers of American Arbitration Association regional offices.
