This report presents court statistics for Arizona for fiscal year 2000 and reviews the accomplishments of the Arizona Judicial Department, with emphasis on its strategic agenda of protecting children, families, and communities; providing access to swift, fair justice; connecting with the community; and being accountable.
Abstract
The report notes that more than 2.5 million cases were filed in all Arizona courts from July 1999 through June 2000, an increase of 1.4 percent over the previous year; that it cost $109.81 to process a case; and that more than 57,000 individuals were on probation at the end of the fiscal year. The discussion also noted that salaries in the Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC) and appellate courts averaged 18 percent below market levels, that turnover in the AOC was more than 20 percent in fiscal year 2000 and was projected to be at 30 percent in the next fiscal year, and that below-market salaries and high turnover are also problems in probation. However, drug courts continued their success, a web site dedicated to teaching children about the law received more than 120,000 visits per month, and that April 2000 brought the first of several dialogues between Arizona’s courts and crime victims regarding victims’ issues. Another accomplishment was the establishment of a web site to provide prospective jurors in Maricopa County with immediate access to frequently asked questions, information about parking, maps to the various court locations, and other information.
