DESCRIBES THE LIVING UNIT PROGRAM OPERATING IN THE CANADIAN PENAL SYSTEM.
Abstract
FOLLOWING A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE LIVING UNIT PROGRAM WHICH CONSISTS OF AREAS HOUSING INMATES THAT PROVIDE CONSTANT CONTACT AND SPECIAL SERVICES, THE AUTHORS COMMENT ON HOW THE PROGRAM WAS STARTED. A PRINCIPAL GOAL OF THE PROGRAM IS TO PROVIDE A GROUP APPROACH TO PROBLEM SOLVING. THE PARTICIPANTS INCLUDE ALL INMATES IN PENAL INSTITUTIONS WHERE THE PROGRAM OPERATES AND ALL STAFF OF THE CANADIAN PENAL SYSTEM. THE PROGRAM INCORPORATES CITIZEN VOLUNTEER GROUPS AND EXPOSURE TO COMMUNITY CIVIC GROUPS. A DESCRIPTION OF THE EDUCATIONAL AND TRAINING REQUIREMENTS FOR LIVING UNIT OFFICERS AND STEPS FOR IMPLEMENTING THE PROGRAM IS INCLUDED. --IN ENGLISH AND FRENCH
