This Resource Handbook for the Children's Court of New South Wales (Australia) provides guidance on matters that apply to children and youth in the legal system.
Abstract
The Children's Court of New South Wales (NSW) is a unique court with specialized practice and procedures regarding children and youth either charged with a crime or in need of care and protection. This Resource Handbook is intended primarily to assist magistrates, other judicial officers, lawyers who appear before the court, and individuals interested in the court's work. The Handbook is divided into two main types of matters the court addresses: care and protection matters and criminal matters, which includes parole. In both sections, common issues are highlighted, along with material on particular types of matters. Resources include relevant legislation and regulations, court practice notes, important cases, useful articles, papers, and information available in other media, such as podcasts. In the section on criminal matters, a sentencing chart displays sentencing options. The children's Court is the State Parole Authority for most parolees who are sentenced for offenses committed less than 18 years old. A list of resources includes the Children's Law News and useful Web sites.
