The Sentencing Database System of the LIST Foundation in British Columbia, Canada was studied with respect to its development, use, and possible future modifications.

Abstract

This computerized database was created to reduce sentencing disparity and to aid attorneys in preparing their submissions regarding sentencing. The system contains information on the dispositions of 70,000 cases, 1,600 appellate court decisions, an electronic textbook on sentencing law, and a directory of correctional institutions and programs in British Columbia. Interviews with users revealed that the system is readily available and easy to use. However, the system is not used as much as it should be or as was expected. Enhancements proposed by users include increasing the system's speed, providing more subcategories of offenses, and providing the capability of searching by key words.
