This manual explains the use of an instrument that can produce a description of how an individual feels about three strategies in corrections: punishment, vs treatment conflict
Abstract
The Correctional Strategies Scale (CSS) is a 30-item untimed instrument that can be given to individuals or to groups. It takes from 10 to 15 minutes to complete the scale. The instrument is the result of a 2-year research project that included administering the scale to several research groups. The groups consisted of 70 probation officers with less than a year's field experience, 35 prison psychologists, and 104 probation officers with more than a year of field experience. Statistical analysis showed that all the scales significantly differentiated several of the groups. The scale is applicable to training, instrumented learning, research on corrections, consultation to correctional agencies, correctional evaluation, personnel decisions, and planning. 12 tables, 1 figure, sample instrument, and scoring key.
