This report presents statistical tables reflecting the activities of the police, supreme and district criminal courts, correctional service, and the Juvenile Justice Division of the Department of Community Welfare of South Australia for the period January 1, 1981, to March 31, 1981.
Abstract
The report contains statistics pertaining to selected crimes reported or becoming known to the police, including homicide and general assault; sexual assaults and other sexual offenses; robbery, extortion, and larceny from a person; offenses against property; and motor vehicle, traffic, and related offenses. It also represents court data showing principal charge laid and plea by case outcome for these offenses; sentence imposed by principal offense convicted; duration of proceedings by principal offense charge and plea at initial appearance; appeals from the supreme and district criminal courts; appeals from courts of summary jurisdiction; and dispositions by plea, type of court, and month. Data from the Department of Correctional Services include daily average time spent in custody; prison population and persons under supervision at the end of a quarter; persons received into custody by race, by age, by offense charged, and by employment status at latest offense; persons discharged from custody by form of discharge; probation and parole cases completed by type of case completion; and trends in selected characteristics of persons in custody and under supervision. Statistics regarding juveniles pertain to appearances by offense and outcome; appearances by age, sex, race, and employment status; appearance by secure care; appearances by living arrangements and by district of residence; and trends in selected characteristics of children's court and aid panel appearances.
